pay in cash

  1. While it is most common to say pay in cash or simply pay cash, it is not wrong to say pay with cash or pay by cash. If you go to Google Books and search for any of those phrases, you will find them.

It is especially common to use by cash in phrases such as pay by cash or credit card or when the two payment methods are being compared in the same passage.

You can still teach your students to say in cash and by credit card (but with a credit card), but they are not wrong if they say by cash.

  2. Dictionaries report what is most common. But that doesn't mean that other prepositions are necessarily wrong. By cash is used, especially when followed by or credit card or when both payment systems are being discussed in the same passage. Please see the answer here.

  3. By cash is sometimes used, especially when contrasted in the same sentence or paragraph with paying by credit card. You can also say pay cash, pay in cash, and pay with cash.
